Chernobyl

Today we did a listening test about Chernobyl. Chernobyl is a place where a nuclear power plant exploded and killed 31 people over a period of months due to radiation.

Chernobyl Facts:

1. Where is Chernobyl? Chernobyl is in Pripyat in Ukraine, SSR.

2. You can still die due to the RADIATION in Chernobyl. Do not go there!

3. Chernobyl is the worst accident in the world. It is also the biggest Nuclear explosion.

Facts:
1. Around 1.7 million Polish were sent to labor camps around the world.
2. There were 733 children and 102 Polish adults that arrived in NZ.
3. Joseph Stalin sent over 120,000 Polish prisoners to Iraq.
4. Our prime minister Peter Fraser invited polish children in for the duration of war.
5. Most of the refugees settled in NZ others joined in the the 1940's.
6. They were forced labor in Siberia and evacuated through the middle east before coming to NZ.

The Ant And The Dove was the poem we heard by
James K. Baxter, it was a nice poem and it showed 
us that if we help others they will help us back.
In James's last years he worked as a social worker
to alcoholics and drug addicts.

on the second of December 2007 96 medals were stolen from Waiouru Museum.  On the 21st of October 2008 they put out a reward for $300,000 Reward for the medals. A week earlier 2 men had been put in prison, one was sent for six years, the other eleven years.

Today in NZ History, James Prendergast was the 
Attorney-General from 1865-1875. James Prendergast 
took the land from the Maori saying he would use it to 
build a school, but he never did. The Maori wanted the 
land back, but when they asked James said 
they could not have it back.

Main Body of NZEF sails to war
16 October 1914

 left Wellington to go war, on board there were around 
8,500 men and 4,000 horses. This was the second
 MAJOR departure for the first world war after the 
Samoa Advance Force. Over 30,000 people attended 
the farewell in Wellington, there were others in Auckland 
and Christchurch.
